Slough Child and Family Wellbeing health visiting team is here to help make sure that all children have the best start in life. Health Visitors are fully qualified nurses or midwives who have undertaken additional training to become specialist community public health nurses. Our health visiting service to you starts at 28 weeks of pregnancy and continues until your child goes to school. Throughout this time, we will provide you with support and information on a range of health topics such as feeding your baby, healthy growth and development, emotional wellbeing, and access to services.

We are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of you and your child so will have a minimum of five contacts with you.

  • An antenatal contact to meet with you (and your partner) after 28 weeks of pregnancy
  • A home visit when your baby is between 10 and 14 days old
  • A contact when your baby is between 6 and 8 weeks old to discuss how you are managing and to address any concerns you may have.
  • A review to assess your baby’s development before your baby is one year old (usually between 9 and 11 months)

How many home visits will I receive?

Each family’s needs are different, and our team will support you throughout the early days of your baby’s life.

You will receive an antenatal contact after 28 weeks of pregnancy, a visit during the first two weeks of your baby’s life, and another contact at 6-8 weeks.

We will assess your child’s development when they are between 8 and 12 months old and again between 2 and 2.5 years old.

Our team can offer support and advice at any time in between these core contacts.

What happens during a home visit?

At each visit you will have the opportunity to talk with your health visitor about how things are going, and when the baby arrives how your baby is doing.

The health visitor will provide information about how to care for your baby and how to play and talk with your baby to help them grow and learn. They will support you to identify and plan for your baby’s needs, your needs, and your family’s needs.

The health visitor may take photos or videos with your permission.

Who will I see?

Our health visiting team includes health visitors, staff nurses, student health visitors, staff nurses, community nursery nurses, student nurses and administrators.

Health Visitors are fully qualified nurses or midwives who have undertaken additional training to become specialist community public health nurses.

They will identify any additional support that you may need and address any concerns you have. The team works closely with Midwives, GPs, and Practice Nurses and may refer or signpost you to other services.
