5 to 19 years (up to 25 for SEND)

When your child goes to school at the age of 5, care is transferred seamlessly from the Health Visiting team to the School Aged service.

Our dedicated School Age team offers a service to all children who live in Slough. We’re here to help you and your family from the time your child is 5 until they turn 19 (or 25 for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)). The team consists of Specialist Community Public Health Nurses, School Nurses and Healthy Family Support Practitioners.

How we can help

  • Support children and young people to build resilience so that they can enjoy their childhood and become healthy, confident adults.
  • Offer confidential, personalised advice and support about a range of health and wellbeing topics.
  • Collaborate with families, teachers, and other services to create a supportive environment where every child and young person feels that they can ask for help and support when they need it.
  • Provide health screenings at key stages of development, such as starting school, transitioning to secondary school (Year 6) and mid-teen review (Year 9).

National Child Measurement Programme and School Health Needs Assessments

Our school nursing team will ask your permission to monitor the BMI and growth of your child as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. These reviews take place in in Reception (ages 4 and 5) and in Year 6 (ages 10 and 11).

School Health Needs Assessments aim to identify any additional needs or concerns that may require support from our services or other appropriate services.

We will provide the School Health Needs Assessment questionnaires at the appropriate times.

  • Reception: parents and carers will be asked to complete this questionnaire for their child/children.
  • Year 6: pupils will be asked to complete this questionnaire.
  • Year 9: pupils will be asked to complete this questionnaire.

Support for children and young people

We always encourage young people to talk about any worries or problems with parents/carers and families first, however we understand that some things are private.

Below are ways children and young people can contact us for confidential help.

  • Weekly confidential drop-in clinics – no appointment needed

A School Nurse will hold confidential drop-in sessions in every secondary school so young people can discuss any health or wellbeing concerns. You don’t need to make an appointment, just pop in to discuss health issues, worries about your wellbeing, or personal stuff. The nurses are there to listen and help.

Our school nurses can give you private advice, care and treatments. We can work with you one-on-one, or with your parents/carers and family.

When you meet with a school nurse, it’s confidential – which means we won’t share what you tell us – but sometimes we may need to talk to others who can help keep you safe and healthy. How much privacy you are allowed depends on your age, how well you understand things and what the risks to your health and wellbeing are.

In general, we want to respect your privacy while making sure you get the support you need. The nurses are there to support you, not judge. We hope you’ll be open and honest so we can help.

  • Our team

The people in our team work together to support you in taking care of your physical health and emotional wellbeing so you could speak to either a School Nurse or a School Health Support Worker – and you can feel confident knowing they are really experienced in taking care of children and young people.

You can call us and ask to speak to a duty nurse who will be able to give you advice about a range of health and wellbeing related questions. Or you can email us if you prefer.
